In Chile, in the Atacama Desert, about 40 kilometers away from the port city of Freirina, there are the remains of the former Labrar Copper Smelter, a foundry that operated actively until the end of the 19th century.
This heritage site is currently known as Chimeneas or Torres de Labrar, which includes three brick masonry constructions reinforced with riveted iron profiles, which were part of this industrial complex for copper extraction.
Due to the industrial relevance and cultural significance that the site has, it was declared a National Monument by Law 17288 of National Monuments in the Category of Historical Monument, the maximum legal protection existing in the country for heritage sites. The protection was formalized by “Supreme Decree” No. 8377, on October 2, 1980.
This project was a public competition put out to tender by the Council of National Monuments of Chile, contemplating multidisciplinary work. It included a historical construction study of the site along with a complete geometric survey of the existing constructions; a survey of its architectural and structural damages, and a complete diagnosis of its current situation. The three towers have a square base and are approximately 2 meters per side, with a height of 18 meters. They were made of brick masonry and externally reinforced with iron profiles and tensioners. All this background, both bibliographic and geometric, was the basis for proposing a structural consolidation design – also considering the urgency that the intervention requires as well as the difficulty of accessing the site, where these chimneys are located.

Questo sito, attualmente conosciuto come Chimeneas o Torres de Labrar, comprende tre costruzioni in muratura di mattoni rinforzate con profili in ferro, che facevano parte di un complesso industriale per l’estrazione del rame.
A causa della rilevanza industriale e del significato culturale che il sito possiede, esso è stato dichiarato Monumento Nazionale dalla Legge 17.288 dei Monumenti Nazionali nella Categoria Monumento Storico, la massima protezione legale esistente nel Cile per i siti di rilevanza storica. La tutela fu formalizzata con "Decreto Supremo" n. 8377, il 2 ottobre 1980.
Questo progetto è stato oggetto di un concorso pubblico indetto dal Consiglio dei Monumenti Nazionali del Cile, che richiedeva un lavoro multidisciplinare. Esso comprendeva, oltre al progetto di messa in sicurezza, uno studio storico del sito, un rilievo geometrico delle costruzioni esistenti, un rilievo volto a evidenziare i danni architettonici e strutturali e una analisi diagnostica della attuale situazione.
Il sito comprende tre torri a base quadrata che misurano circa 2 metri di lato, con un'altezza di 18 metri. Le torri sono state costruite in muratura di laterizio e rinforzate esternamente con profili in ferro. Tutti questi dati, sia bibliografici che geometrici, sono stati la base per proporre un progetto di messa in sicurezza strutturale, che tenessse anche in conto l’urgenza dell'intervento nonché la difficoltà di accesso al sito.
